Using Gobos in Your Space

If the word ‘gobo’ has you stumped, you’re not alone. But, once you realize how intriguing these can be, you may just want one for your space.

So, what is a gobo? A gobo is a stenciled disc that is used in lighting fixtures to project a pattern or image. The term "gobo" is an acronym for "go between optics" which refers to the location of the gobo in the light path of a fixture.

Using a gobo in an interior space can offer several benefits.

Custom Lighting Effects: Gobos allow for customized patterns and designs to be projected onto walls, floors, or ceilings. This can create unique visual effects, enhance the mood, or reinforce a theme, making them ideal for events, parties, or themed environments.

Highlighting Architectural Features: By projecting light patterns with a gobo, you can draw attention to specific architectural elements or design features in a space. This can enhance the visual appeal and focus on areas you want to highlight, adding a layer of sophistication and depth to the interior design.

Sense of Identity: Whether for holidays, special occasions, or you just want a particular theme in your space, this personalized touch can help you express who you are, create a memorable impression, and contribute to a cohesive visual experience, such as this gobo in a bedroom space for Valentine’s Day.

With designer Sarah’s background in entertainment lighting, suggesting a gobo for this space was a no-brainer. Using a SpotFX fixture and a gobo from Apollo MFG, the gobo was loaded into the fixture, and all that was left to do was point and shoot. And, of course, enjoy!
